The Gold Coast secures boxing world title fight as the city’s events industry steams ahead

PalmerBet Presents: IBF Cruiserweight Word Title

The Gold Coast has secured a major International Boxing Federation (IBF) world title fight, the first in Australia in almost five years.

Supported by Major Events Gold Coast (MEGC) the blockbuster IBF Cruiserweight world title fight between Gold-Coast based Jai Opetaia and current world title holder Mairis Briedis from Latvia will be an exciting addition to a packed calendar of world-class events coming to the Gold Coast in 2022.

MEGC is thrilled to add a world title fight to its portfolio of international and national events and this fight will undoubtedly put the Gold Coast in the spotlight both across Australia and around the globe.

The increased exposure will generate significant economic benefits for the local tourism industry while showcasing the Gold Coast as the Ultimate Stage for major events. When and where in the city this long-awaited world title fight will be held is expected to be announced soon.

Major Events Gold Coast CEO Jan McCormick said:

“MEGC works hard to attract world-class events like this one which bring huge economic benefits for our local economy, so this is a wonderful coup for the city that will give boxing fans all over the country an excellent reason to visit the Gold Coast.”

Promoter Dean Lonergan from D and L Events said:

“The fight will be beamed around the world and will show that Queensland is open for business and tourism once again. I applaud Tourism Events Queensland and Major Events Gold Coast for bringing.”

SummerSalt Coolangatta

The IBF world title fight further diversifies the MEGC event calendar for 2022 with a jam-packed list of upcoming festivals and other events.

February is music month on the Gold Coast with MEGC supporting three fantastic music events, kicking off this weekend with For the Love at Doug Jennings Park on Saturday 19 February followed the next day by the sold-out SummerSalt, held on the beachside at Queen Elizabeth Park in Coolangatta.

Later in the month Eurovision fever comes to our very own Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre with 10 artists and one Wildcard Tik Tok star battling it out to compete in Italy.

In March, the best park skaters from around the country roll into the Gold Coast for BOWLZILLA at Elanora Skate Park. Then we hit the beach for Gold Coast VolleySlam, featuring 10 days of beach volleyball action in Coolangatta.

Major Events Gold Coast CEO Jan McCormick said:

There really is an event for everyone happening this year on the Gold Coast, and with national and international borders now open we are expecting to see plenty of visitors back here ready to enjoy and participate in all the fantastic events MEGC supports.”
