The Gold Coast capitalises on new sporting craze

The Gold Coast community has already embraced one of the country’s fasting growing sports with pickleball clubs springing up all over the coast, and now the city has secured the right to host the sports’ biggest competition, the Australian Pickleball Championships.

The four-year deal secured by Experience Gold Coast will see professional and amateur pickleball players descend on the Gold Coast for six days every October from 2024-2027, with numbers expected to grow year-on-year starting with close to 1000 players in 2024.

Pickleball’s popularity has exploded across the country and we’re excited to be part of the sport’s exceptional growth by hosting its premier event on the Gold Coast for the next four years,” said Experience Gold Coast CEO John Warn.

“We’re proud to be able to add pickleball to the city’s already diverse and vibrant calendar of major events. These mass participation sporting events don’t just provide a significant economic boost for the local visitor economy but showcase our incredible destination to the rest of the country at the same time.”

Pickleball is a paddle sport played with two or four people that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. Originating in the US back in the 60s, the humble backyard game soon boomed with clubs in every US state, then in more than 60 countries. The fast-growing sport found its way to Australia in 2015, where an estimated 30,000 now play the sport socially across the country with close to 140 clubs.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said that as the city with the largest pickleball association in Queensland, and Australia, it made sense to hold the national championships here.

“Pickleball is booming around the country and nowhere more so than right here on the Gold Coast where some of Australia’s top pickleball champions live and play,” said Mayor Tom Tate.

“We can’t wait to welcome the 1000-plus players and their supporters to our city for the first time in 2024 for this six-day festival of pickleball. Give me a paddle and let’s see what all the fuss is about!”

The 2024 Australian Pickleball Championship will be held at KDV Sport in Carrara from 2-7 October, with the sport and lifestyle facility set to be transformed into the official home of pickleball over the six days.

Spectators are invited to not just watch the action on court but pick up a paddle and give it a go themselves.

“Pickleball Australia are delighted to bring the 2024-2027 Australian Pickleball Championships to the Gold Coast,” said Brendan Lee, Executive Officer of Pickleball Australia. “The Gold Coast is the perfect location for our pickleball community to come together to crown our nation’s best and celebrate Australia’s fastest-growing sport.”

“As we close in on 10,000 official members nationwide and approximately 30,000 participants, we know our members from around Australia and the world will flock to the event to experience the festival-like atmosphere and test themselves against Australia’s best. The Gold Coast is home to many of Australia’s top opens, senior, junior and para-pickleball players including Sarah Burr, Dion Reweti, Jenny and Raymond Ware and Oliver Gray.”

“The 2023 Championships saw more than 700 participants compete at Blacktown in Western Sydney and we believe we will see the 2024 event eclipse 1000 entries and set a new Southern Hemisphere record.”

The 2024 Australian Pickleball Championships will also be livestreamed.

The Gold Coast gets ready to welcome music icon Paul McCartney

On Saturday 4 November, iconic singer-songwriter and performer Paul McCartney will perform for the first time on the Gold Coast, and the city is more than ready to welcome the music legend.

Paul McCartney’s performance at Heritage Bank Stadium will be the final show on the Australian leg of his acclaimed ‘Got Back’ Tour, with the stadium preparing for tens of thousands of fans to descend on Carrara to enjoy this not-to-be-missed show.

The stadium’s General Manager Tim Carey said the event would be another international blockbuster for the Gold Coast community to enjoy.

“At Heritage Bank Stadium we pride ourselves on being able to deliver world-class events right here on the Gold Coast,” Mr Carey said.“Our city has now become a premier location for touring artists to visit and we are excited to welcome Paul McCartney to our ever-growing list of international acts hosted at Heritage Bank Stadium.”

“The stage is set and we’re looking forward to seeing Paul McCartney bring Heritage Bank Stadium to life on Saturday night.”

With just over 24 hours until Paul McCartney takes to the stage, the production and catering bump in is in full swing with the stadium revealing what goes into preparing for a show of this size.

Not only does it take a full week to transition the stadium from an AFLW match on Friday 27 October to Paul McCartney on Saturday 4 November but 20,000sqm of turf protection needs to be laid out and 14,000 temporary seats installed on the footy field.

The stadium’s catering team are readying themselves for a big night, estimating that concert goers will consume 3,500 cups of hot chips,1000 hot dogs,17,000 beers and 5,000 bottles of water. Then when the show is over 25 x 40ft trucks full of Tour production equipment will be shipped out, within two hours of the closing song.

“This is going to be a once in a lifetime performance you don’t want to miss,” said Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate.

“To have Paul McCartney choose to play his final Australian concert of the tour in our city sends a message to the world that we put on great shows and we are determined to continue to attract the world’s best artists to our shores.”

If you haven’t already secured your tickets, there are still limited tickets available through Ticketek.

Heritage Bank Stadium is encouraging fans attending Saturday’s concert to get there early to avoid queues. Gates open at 5:00pm (early access available from 3:00pm) with the concert scheduled to start at 7:00pm.

Public transport to the stadium is free on QLD Rail and Kinetic Buses. Visit Translink for more information.

Acting CEO of Experience Gold Coast Rachel Hancock said businesses and hotels across the Gold Coast are gearing up for a busy weekend.

“Our STR Accommodation Report is showing really strong bookings over this weekend for Paul McCartney with occupancy up around 88% for Saturday night which is terrific and up on this time last year,” said Ms Hancock. “Recent trends tell us we can still expect some last-minute bookings as well so we’re anticipating Paul McCartney’s concert will bring a significant boost for the local economy.”

Gold Coast local Casey Barnes takes out the P&O People’s Choice Award for the second time

Over 135 live shows from close to 60 artists lit up Broadbeach as Groundwater Country Music Festival (CMF) celebrated ten years of country music on the Gold Coast. The award-winning festival saw tens of thousands of music fans coming together to watch their favourite artists and share a love of country music. One performance, by one standout artist was voted by fans as best in show!

On the 2023 lineup were some of the Australia’s best and most loved country acts plus some incredible international guests but it was local sensation Casey Barnes, who was announced as the winner of the 2023 P&O People’s Choice Award. Ironically, Casey got his first big break playing at Groundwater CMF (formerly Broadbeach Country Music Festival) in 2014.

This is the second time Casey Barnes has won the hearts of fans at Groundwater CMF having been the recipient of the inaugural P&O People’s Choice Award in 2019.

His performance, personality and passion ignited the Surf Parade Stage last Friday night captivating the crowd of thousands, that included his own family.

“I am absolutely blown away to take out this year’s P&O People’s Choice Award at Groundwater CMF!” said Casey Barnes. “We were only saying yesterday that Friday night’s show easily will go down as one of my absolute favourites of my career to date… it was such a special night. There’s nothing better than a hometown crowd and it was even more special to have my entire family there too. A huge thank you to all the fans who voted and have supported this amazing festival over the last 10 years and a massive congrats to Mark Duckworth and the entire team on another incredible event!

Groundwater CMF, along with the festival’s Support Partner P&O Cruises, invited festival goers to show their love and appreciation by voting for their favourite artist across the three-day festival. With an epic lineup including Lee Kernaghan, Amber Lawrence, Adam Harvey & Beccy Cole, The Wolfe Brothers, USA sensation Jackson Dean and of course Gold Coast local Casey Barnes it was always going to be a tight race to the finish line.

“The P&O People’s Choice Award has become a popular part of the Groundwater CMF experience, with thousands of entries coming in throughout the festival,” said Mark Duckworth, Festival Director. Casey has been a festival favourite for some time, so it doesn’t surprise me that he has taken out this fan-nominated award for the second time. Casey’s headline show this year was a lot of fun, drawing huge crowds and the band were on fire!”

2023 has been a continuation of wins for Casey Barnes, having picked up Golden Guitar Award wins for Album of the Year and Top Selling Album of the Year for his latest album, Light It Up along with the APRA Award for Most Performed Country Work and the 2022 ARIA Award for Best Country Album. Now with a second P&O People’s Choice Award under his belt there seems to be no stopping this local sensation who is now also making major inroads in the US.

Casey is not the only winner, one very lucky voter has won a holiday for two onboard P&O Cruises’ Country Music Cruise, departing from Brisbane on 30 November 2024.

“We are delighted to have once again joined forces with Groundwater Country Music Festival to celebrate Australia’s remarkable country music talent,” said Ryan Taibel, Vice President Sales & Partnerships of P&O Cruises Australia. “While all performances throughout the festival were incredible, Casey Barnes sung just the right tune, winning fans’ hearts, and votes. From the entire P&O Cruises team, thank you for all who voted and congratulations Casey on receiving this year’s People’s Choice Award.”

Groundwater CMF returns to the Gold Coast from 18-20 October 2024 ready to bring music lovers yet another huge three days of the best of Australian country music and no doubt some more incredible international acts.

Groundwater CMF shares it success with its 2023 Sponsor Family – City of Gold Coast, Tourism and Events Queensland, P&O Cruises, Gold Coast Airport, Clean Vibes, EVENTelec, KIX Country, 102.9 Hot Tomato, the Yugambeh Region Aboriginal Corporation Alliance (YRACA) and our Charity Partner Drought Angels.

Groundwater Country Music Festival stamps a decade of success

With 1300 songs, 135 live shows and close to 60 homegrown and international artists across 15 stages, Groundwater Country Music Festival 2023 was a party to remember.

Tens of thousands of music fans flocked to the Gold Coast to help with the ten-year celebrations. The crowds and atmosphere over the past three days reflecting Australia’s growing love affair with country music. It’s not surprising considering Australia has one of the biggest fan bases in the world.

Australian country music royalty Lee Kernaghan, Amber Lawrence, Adam Harvey and Beccy Cole, The Wolfe Brothers and Gold Coast local Casey Barnes were among a stacked lineup that also featured the next wave of Australian Country artists.

“Ten years ago, we went out on a limb and put on a country music festival on the Gold Coast. Since then, country music has exploded into one of the most popular music genres in Australia and it is exciting to see our festival heaving with new and loyal fans.” – Mark Duckworth, Festival Director.

From Paul Thorn in 2013 to US sensation Jackson Dean in 2023, having an international flavour to the festival’s program over the past ten years has helped cement Groundwater CMF within the Australian country music scene.

“I don’t think you can turn down an opportunity to go play in Australia. It’s awesome that as far south as south goes, English speaking, there’s a crowd that knows some words to my songs. It’s a dream come true to play on the beautiful Gold Coast at Groundwater Country Music Festival.” – Jackson Dean, artist.

USA Country Music legends Asleep at the Wheel and Canada’s Dungarees also bolstered the international program with acclaimed singer-songwriters Melissa Carper and Summer Dean.

Since the festival’s inception, it has welcomed close to 400 country acts and has been a springboard for emerging artists.

“I have watched this festival grow over the five years I have been there and there’s no doubt Groundwater CMF is one of the best country music festivals in Australia. It’s a real honour to be on this lineup because there are such amazing Australian artists like Lee Kernaghan, The Wolfe Brothers, Casey Barnes and incredible international artists, like Jackson Dean, so to have that high calibre of artists on the Gold Coast playing at a free country music festival is amazing.” – Chloe Styler, artist.

Groundwater CMF first timer Sara Berki had to ‘pinch’ herself during the KIX LIVE – Songwriters segment. Perched on stage in between Jackson Dean and Amber Lawrence while watching the performances of idol Adam Harvey it was a moment she’ll never forget.

“I literally cannot believe I am already in the company of my idols. Groundwater is making my dreams a reality.” – Sara Berki, artist

It wasn’t just music lovers that benefited, local businesses were also heaving. As the popularity of the country music genre and the love for Groundwater CMF continues to surge, it will be exciting to see what evolves in the next ten years.

Groundwater CMF wraps after another successful year with thanks to our Sponsor Family – City of Gold Coast, Tourism and Events Queensland, P&O Cruises, Gold Coast Airport, Clean Vibes, EVENTelec, KIX Country, 102.9 Hot Tomato, the Yugambeh Region Aboriginal Corporation Alliance (YRACA) and our charity partner Drought Angels.

Tens of thousands bring in spring with live music and good times

Amazing live sets from BENEE, Matt Corby, Bag Raiders and more, a beachside skate park, murals and art installations, coupled with three days of perfect weather helped prove why SPRINGTIME is becoming one of the country’s favourite beachside festivals.

Not a single patch of sand was left empty on Surfers Paradise beach this weekend, as thousands danced and sang along to some of Australia’s best homegrown and international music acts in perfect spring weather at the Gold Coast’s SPRINGTIME festival.

Proving why spring will never be the same again, the three-day festival saw a sea of people spend the long weekend swimming in crystal blue water, sunbathing and immersing themselves in all the good times and good fun on offer at SPRINGTIME. The epic lineup across the Beach Stage and the Dr. Martens Street Stage featured more than 30 of the country’s best homegrown artists.

After tens of thousands attended SPRINGTIME last year, the addition of international superstar BENEE in 2023 plus a brand new commissioned art installation, the Vans Skate Plaza, and a DJ Skool at the Paradise Centre saw an even bigger wave of music fans flock to the festival this year.

As Australian dance royalty Bag Raiders took the stage on Friday night, it was clear that the crowds had returned – this time with friends – turning Surfers Paradise into a real vibe for music tourists from around Australia. Saturday night crowds, which spread as far as the eye could see, welcomed international popstar BENEE with open arms, while on Sunday Australia’s very own Matt Corby served as the perfect conclusion to this spring party to remember, with his unique blend of blissed out indie surf-pop.

“This being a free concert is just next level, I love that, we need to be doing this more often,” said NZ artist BENEE. I love Australia, it’s close to home and this feels like a little holiday.”

Partnering again with the Gold Coast Music Awards (GCMAs) SPRINGTIME continued to live up to its promise of supporting and highlighting local talent. This year’s festival kicked off with an after party celebrating the music community and emerging Gold Coast artists.

GCMAs People’s Choice winner Lyric then took centre stage as she opened SPRINGTIME’s Beach Stage on Friday. What followed was a smorgasbord of incredible Aussie talent across the long weekend with uplifting acts from the likes of Sunshine & Disco Faith Choir, Sycco, Girl and Girl and the Gold Coast’s bella amor.

“I’m just so stoked that this festival is here, and I am so grateful to play here,” said Gold Coast artist bella amor. “It is really cool for people to have an opportunity to hear what talent we have around here. It is great for the Goldie people too, because they can come and have a good time.”

Complementing the live music element of the program, live art mural painting added a kaleidoscope of colour to the city’s streets thanks to the candy-coloured aesthetic of renowned Korean-Australian artist YEAHYEAHCHLOE and Yuggera – Minjungbal – Nyangbul – Ugarapul land duo Malara Rise, who’s alluring mural framing the ocean paid homage to their ancestory.

Punters of all ages looking to engage with art and test their skills weren’t left out, as the creative minds at Shock Therapy Arts definitely brought it, with their commissioned installation Quest of Chaos causing, you guessed it, chaos. All weekend, participants climbed, scrambled and tumbled through the giant obstacle course on Surfers Paradise beach as they attempted to defeat King Chaos and his gang of interdimensional troublemakers. A totally unique interactive experience only found at SPRINGTIME.

“This has been a great festival, we’ve had perfect weather and it’s been a pleasure to watch the beach filling up with fans coming to see their favourite artists,” said Festival Director Mark Duckworth. “Second year in, we’re really seeing this festival grow and we’re excited about what SPRINGTIME is going to do for the city into the future.”

The Vans Skate Plaza was a festival highlight with some of Australia’s top skateboarders showing off their world-class runs and tricks to crowds of fans lining the street. Local skaters were invited to drop in alongside the Vans Skate Team.

With Surfers Paradise buzzing with crowds, local businesses, restaurants and bars enjoyed bumper trade proving the importance of major events for the Gold Coast community.

“It has been super busy which is great,” said Nim Pavia from Gelato Messina in Surfers Paradise. “We are located at the Paradise Centre, and it (the stage) is like seven steps to us so we can hear the music and people come in and out and enjoy the beach, enjoy the music and they come and get a gelato.”

Produced by Major Events Gold Coast, SPRINGTIME wraps after another successful year with thanks to our Sponsor Family – City of Gold Coast, Dr. Martens, triple j, Gold Coast Airport, Paradise Centre, Vans, Clean Vibes, EVENTelec, Radio Metro and the Yugambeh Region Aboriginal Corporation Alliance.

“There is no better time to visit the Gold Coast,” said Major Events Gold Coast CEO Jan McCormick. “The sheer variety of events this city is hosting over the next month is extraordinary and it’s the reason why our reputation as the ultimate events destination continues to grow. After years of planning, we are thrilled to see the Pacific Airshow Gold Coast lift off.”

“What sets our event apart from your ‘typical airshow’ is its unique setting, high tempo and diverse hospitality offerings,” said Pacific Airshow Gold Coast founder Kevin Elliott. “We offer something for everyone, including those who have never considered attending an airshow before. There’s always something to see, always something in your face, always something new happening. It’s something you have to experience to understand.”

From 29 August to 10 September the city hosts the World Bowls Championships for the first time. The sport’s pinnacle international competition will be held across five Gold Coast bowls locations, with finals held at Club Helensvale on 2-3 September and Broadbeach Bowls Club on 9-10 September.

“The Gold Coast is a heartland for the sport of bowls, and its clubs and greens are renowned the world over, so anticipation and expectation from the bowls community and competing nations for the 2023 World Bowls Championships is absolutely sky high – akin to what will be on display at the inaugural Pacific Airshow,” said Bowls Australia General Manager – Promotion and Partnerships Aidan Davis.

“This is the first occasion that para-sport players will compete alongside able-bodied bowlers, showcasing the truly inclusive nature of the sport, and with 11 gold medals up for grabs across two blockbuster finals weekends, home crowds will be hoping the Gold Coast greens are a happy hunting ground for the world’s number one bowls team, the Right at Home Australian Jackaroos.”
