From world-famous Coolangatta beaches to a new first digital experience, the iconic Coolangatta Gold will be going virtual in 2020.
The 41.8km iron race known for its toughness will call on competitors, elite and the everyday, to push their own limits, keep active and take part in the free Challenge – “Your Gold, Your Way, Your Challenge”.
Organisers Surf Life Saving Australia made the decision to pivot the event online, in a new first with a digital experience designed to connect the toughest athletes from across the globe.
The event was first run in 1984 and is truly unique. There are not many races quite like it anywhere else in the world and the event continues to be one of the pinnacle endurance events on the Surf Life Saving calendar each year. The gruelling event is made up of three courses that interchange an ocean swim, board paddle, surf ski and soft sand run; long course (41.8km), short course (21km) and youth challenge (2km).
The 2020 virtual Coolangatta Gold is open to all SLSA members and the general public all over the world over a 10-day period from October 16-25.
Whatever your circumstances, the notion of completing a leg of the event, or the entire Long or Short Course, is achievable and inclusive. The Virtual event is an opportunity for you to do as much of the Long (41.8km) or Short (21km) Course as you want – for example, you could complete the 9.3km run leg at home on a treadmill, the 23km ski leg on a rowing machine or the 3.5km swim leg in your backyard pool. Or have a friend do one leg each and connect as a team. Or you could go to your local beach and do the 6.1km board leg or 3.5km swim leg. Or for those on the Gold Coast, you could head to Coolangatta and paddle your ski from Coolangatta to Miami to reach the 23km.
